Academic Chemistry Syllabus

Classroom Rules

1.       No talking while I am trying to teach.

2.       No Cell Phones and Electronic Devices:  I will take any cell phones and electronic devices that are being used in my classroom.  This includes, but is not limited to, phone calls, text messaging, showing picture galleries, playing games, etc.  When I take a cell phone, it will be turned in to the main office, detention will be given, and a parent will be needed to come in and pick up the cell phone.

3.       No Food or Drink.

4.       You must be in your assigned seat every day.

5.       Hall passes will ONLY be issued with an agenda book and only during seatwork.

Attendance

  1. When in school, you are expected to be in Chemistry class when the bell rings!

·         Four Lates = Teacher Detention

·         Eight Lates = Office Detention

  1. If you are absent from class:
    1. Get the daily agenda and notes off of a classmate.
    2. Turn in homework that was due the day that you were absent.
    3. You will have 1 (one) day to complete any homework assignment that was assigned when you were absent.  The assignment must be turned in to the in bin on Mrs. Nevi’s desk.  Missing homework not turned in on time will be a zero.
    4. You will have 3 (three) days (including the day that you return) to make up any test, quiz, or lab.
*Homeroom is a great opportunity to make up missed tests and experiments (or stop by to ask questions)!

  1. After 10 days of excused absences, all work missed will be entered as a zero.

Classroom Preparation

You will need the following items for class everyday:

1.       3-Ring Binder:  Your class calendar and handouts should be neatly organized in this binder.  There will be a binder quiz each nine weeks.

2.       Homework:  Assigned problems, worksheets, and lab reports will be given when deemed necessary and are due promptly at the beginning of the next class.  NO LATE WORK WILL BE ACCEPTED!  Every assignment not turned in when I ask, will not be accepted and will turn into a zero.  Do not ask to go to your locker to retrieve your homework, the answer is no.  I will not collect every homework assignment, but the assignments that are collected will be graded for correctness.    Your lowest homework score will be dropped each nine weeks.

3.       Pencil/Pen

*These items listed (and a calculator) are the ONLY items to be on your desk during class time.  All purses, magazines, books for other classes, etc. must remain under your desk.

Grading

Please check your grade in Skyward.  The web address is:  https://student.norwinsd.org.

·         All grades are promptly put into Skyward, many times within one day of their collection.

·         I will leave messages on Message Board and you can upload PDF versions of assignments.

·         If you notice an error in Skyward, the next class period let me know so that I can double check it.

The final nine week grade will consist of the following:

·         Tests

·         Quizzes (Announced and Unannounced)

·         Homework

·         Lab Handouts, Reports, and Quizzes

The final will consist of 4 Nine Weeks Exams, one at the end of each nine weeks consisting of only the material in that nine weeks period.  There will be limited review, so you are encouraged to use your Nevi Notes to study for these exams.

Testing

  1. I will list the material that the test will cover and the date the test will be given on the board as much as 1 week before the test.
  2. Students are to take the test on the date given.  If you are absent for any reason on the test date, you have three (3) days including the date of return to make up your test.
  3. Any student caught cheating will receive a zero.  There are multiple versions of each test.  There will be no talking or wandering eyes during the test.  I will inspect the desks before and after each test to ensure that no information is written on the desk.
  4. You will have assigned testing seats.
  5. Make-up tests may or may not be the same as the original test.  After three missed test dates (for any reason) essay tests will be required for make-up.

Quizzes

  1. If announced, the material that the quiz will cover and the date the quiz will be given on will be listed on the board as much as 1 week before.  These quizzes may range anywhere from 10-60 points based on the material that is being tested.
  2. Lab quizzes will be given after each lab has been completed.  They will be worth 5-15 points.  You will be able to use your lab notebook.
  3. I reserve the right to give a pop quiz.  These will generally be based on your understanding of the material that you read or that we talked about in class.  These quizzes may range anywhere from 5-15 points.
