The 10th grade course is an integratedlanguage arts program offering high quality, appealing, traditional, andcontemporary literary selections, writing instruction and activities, and studyaids that will guide students into, though, and beyond literature. The literary selections are organized bygenre to encourage comprehensive study of the types of literature: short story, nonfiction, drama, poetry, andnovels. This course puts emphasis onactive reading and appreciation of literature. The writing process guides student through various forms of writing.

The course incorporates and developsthe essential make-up and forms of communication: reading, writing, speaking,and listening. Because we will review a variety of texts (short stories,novels, plays, poems, and informational works), students must set and attainhigh goals to complete the necessary units required for the course. Also, youwill learn essential characteristics, such as focus, content, organization,style, grammar, and mechanics, to develop your writing skills. We will closelyexamine the works of American speakers, presidents and authors. Not only willwe study how these writings impact readers, but also how these works helpeddevelop our country and the idea of being American.

Welcome to English 12! This courseis a study of British and world literature with emphasis on reading analysisand critical writing. Students will read and examine various samples ofliterature. Writing will be bothliterature-based and workplace-based. The class includes vocabulary, critical thinking and readingcomprehension exercises.
Communications 12

This course is intended to cover aseries of real world communication techniques. Students will use various forms of 21st Century Skills throughreal-world research projects and video-based projects. We will directly apply each of the 21stcentury communication skills in daily exercise and discussions. Units include:Email Etiquette, Interviewing, and Leadership.
Creative Writing

This course surveys variousexpressive writing forms including poetry, short story and informal essays -including narrative and descriptive writing. The class will also focus on theliterary forms like characterization, plot, dialogue and setting. Much timewill be spent on writing a short story for publication.
Composition

Spring Semester Only
This is a one-semester course stronglyrecommended for those planning to take AP English courses in the junior andsenior year. It is open for election by tenth, eleventh, and twelfth gradestudents. The major emphasis in this course is on both the single paragraph andthe multi-paragraph expository paper. In the first half of the course thesingle paragraph paper serves to develop basic writing skills such as the topicsentence, specific and concrete details, methods of organization, and sentencestructure. In the second half of the course the informative paper, theargumentative paper, the critical paper, and creative writing serve to developthe techniques of multi-paragraph writing.
Shakespeare

This course examines through textand video the classical elements of Shakespeare's history, comedy and tragedyplays. Using the language of literary criticism, the students will interpretand evaluate Shakespeare's ideas and themes.
Fundamentals of Writing

This course will focus on the 5paragraph essay, including writing an introduction, 3 solid body paragraphs,and a conclusion. Grammar and punctuation will be addressed, as well assentence structure, style, and tone.
Writing a Research Paper

Theintention of this course is to walk students through writing a research paperfrom topic selection to formatting and editing a final copy. Students willchoose a career they are interested in pursuing and gather information aboutthe job's description, the salary, the education needed, its ladder ofadvancement, etc. Students will be encouraged to job shadow for a day tointerview someone in the field. MLA format will be used in writing and grammarand punctuation will be addressed.
AP Literature and Composition 11
Thegoals of an AP English Language and Composition course are diverse because thecollege composition course is one of the most varied in the curriculum. The collegecourse provides students with opportunities to write about a variety ofsubjects and to demonstrate an awareness of audience and purpose. But theoverarching objective in most first-year writing courses is to enable studentsto write effectively and confidently in their college courses across thecurriculum and in their professional and personal lives. Therefore, mostcomposition courses emphasize the expository, analytical, and argumentativewriting that forms the basis of academic and professional communication, aswell as the personal and reflective writing that fosters the development ofwriting facility in any context. Students should be encouraged to place theiremphasis on content, purpose, and audience to allow this focus to guide the organizationof their writing.

BasicComposition College Writing is an introductory writing course that preparesstudents to write in a collegiate environment. The course will examine variousmodes of writing in an attempt to brief students on upcoming compositions thestudent will encounter throughout his or her academic career.
Young Adult Fiction

Thepurpose of this course is to explore works of fiction by modern authors. Studentswill study the pieces from both an analytical and creative perspective.Technology-based projects and creative writing assignments, as well astraditional assignments and tests will be incorporated.
