On-Line Summer Courses

Overview and Participation Requirements

Learning in an online environment can be more demanding than learning in the traditional classroom setting. In an online environment, students are accountable for completing much of the work on their own. Since students work at their own pace for much of the class, they need to have the motivation to keep up with the course work. Students should have basic computer skills, should know how to save documents, use email and access the Internet.

Students who enroll will be required to attend an onsite orientation and may also have several face-to-face meetings at the Norwin High School. Each teacher’s syllabus will outline a specific course calendar and guidelines.

Online teachers will set office hours, schedule face to face meetings and require online discussion boards. Students need to participate in all of these events and ask their teachers for help, when necessary.

The Middle School and High School online courses are for students who have failed any of the following courses and want to earn credit or who passed the courses and want to repeat the course for additional skills building. For example, students who earned a D in geometry who want to move ahead to algebra II should take the online geometry course.

The Bridge to Math summer courses offered at Hillcrest Intermediate School are designed to help students with a smoother transition into either 5thor 6th grade math or 6th grade pre-algebra. Click on the Hillcrest Intermediate School link for additional information on how to register and orientation dates.

Non-Resident Students
Non-resident students attending schools in Westmoreland County, who need credit recovery, are also eligible to participate in the online courses. Students who are residents of Norwin will receive scheduling priority over non-resident students. A course may be cancelled if it does not meet the minimum required number.

Students are required to pay the following fees for the courses.

Non Residents - $125 per course

Course Orientation
A mandatory online course orientation will be held on June 19, 2012 at 6:00 p.m. in the Norwin High School auditorium for high school and middle school students. Students who intend on taking one or more of the online courses MUST attend this orientation. During the orientation, students will learn how to access the online site, work in the Moodle environment and will receive the course syllabus, requirements, textbooks and course materials. Teachers will be available to answer any specific course questions. Students will receive their Moodle usernames and passwords at the orientation.

Grading for Norwin Students – (Non-Resident students follow the grading policies from their home school district.)
Students will receive a percentage grade from the online instructor based on graded assignments, tests/quizzes, projects, etc. This score may be different from what appears on the student’s official transcript. Students who take summer school courses will receive credit for the course and a passing grade of 60% on their official school transcript.
