For
a number of years elementary students have participated in a reading enrichment
program to help motivate children to read. Scholastic Reading Counts! is a
computer-based program created to help motivate children to read.
In brief, children read a book (or have a book read to them) and then
complete a short comprehension test on the computer.
Students accumulate points based on successful completion of tests.
These points can be used to “purchase” items from the Reading Counts!
store in January and May. In addition, students can earn certificates and medallions for
achieving reading goals. The intent of this program is to encourage reading through small incentives with the hope that children will develop an innate love of reading. Students are encouraged to take part but the program is not mandatory. Students who do not participate will be expected to read during the 15-20 minute period that others are taking tests Students who are frequent readers tend to be students who experience success in school. Reading Counts! is one way we try to introduce children to the world of literature. You can also contribute by having reading materials in your home, reading to your child and modeling reading by taking time to read each day. You can learn more about Reading Counts! by visiting the Norwin Council of PTA's website or by visiting the Scholastic Reading Counts! website. Updated 1/10/2007 |
