The
Norwin School District has moved to a
“healthier” menu plan this school year for a number of reasons:
-
It’s the right thing to
do given the rising obesity rates among this nation’s school children.
-
The Pennsylvania
Department of Education, has implemented more stringent audit
guidelines, starting with the 2004-2005 school year.
-
Before this 2004-2005,
schools were
instructed to make a “good faith effort” to reduce the dietary fat.
Starting in 2004-2005, there are monetary fines if District's do not
fall within the 30% of calories from fat, with no more than 10% from
saturated fat!
The
younger students have embraced the new dietary plan, but the High School
students are slower to change their eating habits. To combat this
reluctance, we have been forced to remove the higher fat content items
from the regular menu. Some of the items we have removed, include: french fries, pizza, tacos, nachos and onion rings. All of the “removed
menu items” have been shifted to the a la carte menu. The a la carte
items have increased by .25 cents, over last year’s prices, while the
regular lunch price has remained exactly the same. EXAMPLE:
FRENCH FRIES $1.00
PIZZA $1.75
Along with the .25 cents
increase in price came a corresponding increase in size. The pizza is a
larger cut and the french fries are a larger portion. We encourage
children to take advantage of the fresh fruits and vegetables on the
regular menu, and consider french fries to be an occasional treat. We
feature seven entrees, a wide variety of fresh fruits and vegetables and
low fat desserts on the regular menu, daily. Pizza and french fries will
be featured on the regular menu every so often---just not every day. I
believe that in time the students will adjust to the healthier lifestyle
and learn to make wise food choices.
