Norwin Students Salute Local Veterans

The Norwin choirs did not let the global pandemic stop them from honoring our Veterans. On November 11, the Norwin Combined Choirs from Norwin High School and Norwin Middle School released a video tribute titled, A Salute to Veterans.

This video featured Norwin Choir students in grades 7-12, as well as the High School Junior ROTC cadets. This video also honored 75 community members who have served.

The video can be found at https://youtu.be/wCba1eZsRKs or on YouTube.com by searching for the Norwin Live channel.

"We decided to do a virtual performance to honor those who have fought for our freedom," said Mrs. Lauren Scheirer, one of the choral directors.

The Norwin Combined Choirs includes Bel Canto Women's Choir, Chamber Singers, Show Choir, Concert Choir, Freshman Choir, as well as featuring the 7th/8th grade choirs. The Norwin Combined Choirs is a part of the Norwin School District located in North Huntingdon, PA.

Mrs. Kye-Won Doyle, a long-term substitute who served as a music teacher, added, "having students sing and record their contribution from the safety of their own homes was a great way to continue music in the schools and honor our Veterans."

The choirs also sent thank you cards to veterans and to the men and women currently serving overseas.

At Hillcrest Intermediate School, sixth-grade chorus students prepared three songs for a virtual Veterans Day slideshow program in cooperation with Hillcrest PTA.  They learned and performed the “The Star-Spangled Banner,” “We Honor You,” and an “Armed Forces Medley.”  All Hillcrest students were encouraged to send pictures in with their Veteran.

Sunset Valley Elementary School students wore red, white, and blue, and also wrote letters to Veterans thanking them for their service.  The school also continued its support of the local Wreaths Across America program.

Sheridan Terrace Elementary School students honored Veterans with an American Flag tribute and daily announcements.

Stewartsville Elementary School students continued an annual tradition by dedicating a carnation in a veteran’s honor.  The carnations were placed in a "Commemoration Wreath” that was on display in the school hallway and then taken to the VFW.
